These islands were uninhabited in 1471 when discovered by the
Portuguese, who occupied the islands with prisoners and exiled
Jews. In the 19th Century, agriculture replaced the slave trade
and in 1974 the colony was turned over to Gabon. Independence
came on July 12, 1975 and today the country is basically
dependent on agriculture and fishing for economic survival.
